It's only a bracket to you, but its progress to me!

Well, what a busy year so far! An unexpected promotion in my new job rapidly stunted progress, couples with freezing weather that meant even if I had time, I couldn't face the garage! However, lots of mental effort has been expended! For ages I have being keeping an eye out for a suitable cover for the back of my Fiat Coupe rear lights. I wanted a nice streamlined pod look, but couldn't find anything to match! Then I realised that a large drinks bottle was exactly the right size! A bit of trimming and it's a perfect fit! I have trialled some paint and so far it had given it a durable finish, so good news there! The other problem that had been bugging me was how to locate the air filter. I picked up a k&n from eBay and hoped to use it with the standard intake trunking. Trouble is it is getting really tight round that end of the car and it was really difficult to find a decent spot. Eventually, as ever I have had to compromise and it has ended up a bit closer to the wheel than I would like, and in the path of the hot air from the radiator fan. I think maybe some shielding to prevent water ingress and direct the hot,sit away might be needed! Anyway, I made a bracket for it and welded it on, so all is secure! I also mocked up the radiator hosing to route it around the trunking - hope it all works!!! A second day of minor progress too! I had spent a while planning where to put the side repeaters. My preferred location, in the angle between the upper chassis rail and the diagonal, by the drivers knees, did not meet the IVA visibility limits. After much thought, I have discovered that there is a very generous limit on how far from the front of the vehicle they can go, so I have put them at the back - just held on with a magnetic clamp here!!

Happy New Year!

Well, doesn't time fly? It has been a busy holiday season with family visiting us over both Christmas and New Year. So what progress has been made?
Well, in order to progress, I had to get the car back onto four wheels, which took a surprisingly long time. I was then able to wheel it out of the garage and take a couple of morale improving pictures whilst it was sunny! The Classic Bike Show was on at Newark so I took the opportunity to go as the show was closing in order to catch the Digital Speedos Stand. I bought a Koso DB02R with the extra light housing. The reason for this is because it comes with a mechanical drive that connects to the Fiesta speedo drive, thus removing the need for magnets and sensors - my Fiesta is an early pre-electronic speedo model. In theory, the light unit should be plug and play.
                                                                              It comes with 8 warning light spaces and a dozen symbols so that you can mix and match.
 The downside is that it is essentially a motorbike unit so there is no rear fog symbol and no brake failure symbol, both IVA requirements. As it has been too cold to get in the garage, I got some inkjet printer clear acetate (thanks Mum!) and downloaded a free vector graphics programme from the internet; I then spent an afternoon creating the symbols that I wanted, within a hexagon so that they match the Koso ones.
   


 I imported these into a Pages document and scaled them to the correct size, then hit print. The first run was a disaster but after a while playing with printer settings, I got some pleasing results. Mounting the Koso unit was quite easy. The Sierra column has a threaded moulding where the column stalks bolt on. I am mounting the Fiesta stalks through this and so have made a small aluminium bracket to hold the speedo, using the bike fittings provided. The downside of this is that the unit sits where the Fiesta hazard switch goes. it also isn't quite central so I think i will probably remake it!

I then spent a day or so playing with the hazard switch from the original Rover trying to work out how to make it work properly. Eventually I found a dual pole toggle switch given to me ages ago and have come up with a circuit that uses this instead, albeit with some diodes, as suggested to me on Locostbuilders!

Battery'd and exhausted

It has been a busy few weeks with a few events conspiring against my car building plans. An out-of-the-blue job offer led to a frantic couple of weeks getting courses and inductions done, and the purchase of some alloys to use with winter tyres for my BMW has taken a fair chunk of time as I have been refurbishing them! Anyway, enough excuses! I started trying to mount the wing mirrors. This was a bit of a task as they have a curve moulded into the base which had to be filed flat. That and the fact that the bolt holes were deeply recessed meant that achieving a secure fit was traumatic! It was sorted in the end by using a profiled drawer runner as a spacer for the mounting bolts! I then ordered the battery (online) and the exhaust bends (JP exhausts). I had to specify a 1 7/8ths 100 degree bend to fit over the fiesta downpipe and a 2" 180 bend, which neatly slips over the 1 7/8ths pipe. Then I have been making the tray to mount the battery, which conveniently fits in a location where the existing cables can be used, albeit with different terminals. This now needs welding and mounting.

Bulkhead

Today I welded the bulkhead into position - not an easy task as the space was confined and it involved rotating the chassis multiple times! However, by the end I was very pleased with the results and the lack of distortion! The picture here shows the view from the front of the car looking backwards. Back to it....again

Well, it's been ages since I posted on here. A lot has happened since then! Started looking at changing jobs a year ago and for a while I ended up doing TWO jobs, hence the lack of progress! I have done bits and bobs, but over the last few days I have been making good progress. I have painted the fuel tank in satin black, and prime red the front of the chassis to protect against winter damp! I have made a cover for the throttle pedal (pics to follow) and the front cover for the central tunnel. I then stripped the chassis in order to fit the rear bulkhead. Once the engine was out, I spent today tidying a few welds, and also putting some strengthening on the lower seat belt mounts. Finally I cleaned and prepped the bulkhead so that it is ready to weld. More SOON! Promise!!!

First Start

The new fuel regulator arrived in the post yesterday. Fitted today....Result!!! The engine ran a little rough at first until I noticed that my temporary bung had fallen out of the servo pipe - a thumb over that and the engine ran as sweet as a nut!!!

Starting to start!

Well, all was set for the big day! Oil changed, new filter and fuel pump temporarily set up in a plastic tub. I pinched the battery from my C1 and connected it to the loom and turned the key - nothing happened! A quick search showed a almost no fuses in the 'small' fusebox. A week passed and a trip to halfords produced a box of assorted fuses - replaced the lot just to be sure! Turned key - at least this time some of the dashboard lights lit up! Having consulted the Gurus of Locostbuilders (thanks everyone!) I began to go through the loom carefully. By consulting the ECU pinout diagram, I discovered that one of the ECU earths was not made. Once that was found, the starter relay clicked. No noise from the fuel pump though. A further search revealed another missing earth. Finally the engine turned, but no sparks. A check revealed 12v at the coil pack so I began to check the crank and cam sensors. Whilst doing this, I found a connector that was not quite 'clicked' together - HURRAY, sparks!!!!!!

For a while, I had been worried about the vacuum connections from the throttle body - there are 4 - 1 to the servo, 1 to the EGR. One had no attachment to it whilst the other had a red cloth pipe attached. A check on a friends car showed that this should go to the fuel pressure regulator - this already had a pipe from it though. The 2 could be pushed together with difficulty though. So, fuel in plastic pot, time to turn the engine. No joy, several times!!! Then the team of keen observers and cameraman (wife and son!!) spotted the puddle under the engine!!! Fuel was coming out of the pipe from the fuel regulator. Opinion was that the diaphragm could be split, thus sucking fuel through. A picture was posted on Locostbuilders to help. I was slightly concerned that I was actually looking at the regulator, especially as it had sytec fuel spec hose attached to it and it looked different to the photos. I removed the regulator to even more confusion as I could not see how it functioned! A google image search gave all the answers!!! What I have is an adaptor that allows the fitment of an external (variable pressure) regulator - hence the fuel spec hose, the 'extra' red cloth hose and the fuel being delivered into the inlet!!!!! Problem solved - all I need now is a fuel regulator and I should be in business!!!
